Project CHARM
Care Home Aspiring Registered Managers Programme
About the Programme
Project CHARM is a CPD and CMI-recognised leadership development programme designed for professionals working in adult social care who want to step into registered manager roles but are unsure how to cross the gap between clinical expertise and organisational leadership.
The programme focuses on the real demands of the registered manager role. It does not teach theory for theory’s sake. It builds practical leadership habits, confidence with regulation, people management, governance, and basic finance.
Project CHARM was developed in response to a persistent leadership gap in social care. Many capable deputies are ready to step up but lack structured opportunities, protected learning time, and fair access to development. This programme is a practical attempt to change that.
The programme is delivered free to participants. Places are limited.

This four-day, in-person programme is structured across four carefully designed modules, each aligned to regulatory expectations and mapped to management competencies. Learners will explore statutory duties under the Health and Social Care Act, leadership and people management, operational governance, and quality improvement strategies. Sessions are delivered through interactive workshops, real-world case studies, coaching exercises, and reflective practice.
Our facilitators are experienced healthcare leaders, educators, and quality improvement specialists with a deep understanding of CQC standards and the day-to-day realities of care home management. Guest speakers and academic partners contribute further insight, making the experience both rigorous and inspiring.
Who the programme is for
Project CHARM is suitable for you if:
-
You are a professional working in adult social care
-
You are currently holding a leadership position and thinking of the next steps in your career
-
You are considering becoming a registered manager within the next 12–24 months
-
You want to develop confidence in leadership, regulation, governance, and decision-making
-
You are willing to commit time to learning, reflection, and applied practice
You do not need to hold a management qualification to apply.
You do need curiosity, honesty about what you do not yet know, and commitment to attend all programme dates.
What the programme involves
Project CHARM runs over five months and includes:
-
Four face-to-face learning days, spaced across the programme
-
Post-module assignments, designed to be applied in your own workplace
-
Light-touch mentoring and reflective check-ins between modules
-
CPD recognition, mapped to the Chartered Management Institute Professional Standard at Aspiring Manager
The programme is designed to fit around operational realities. Learning is focused, practical, and closely tied to everyday leadership decisions.
What you will learn
The programme is structured around four core modules:
1. Role and accountability
Understanding the registered manager role, legal responsibilities, regulatory expectations, and professional accountability.
2. Leading people
Building authority without hierarchy, managing performance, supervising fairly, and creating psychologically safe teams.
3. Governance and risk
Learning how governance works in practice. Not paperwork for show, but systems that catch mistakes early and protect residents.
4. Change with finance
Understanding basic finance, reading a P&L, making safe decisions with limited resources, and leading improvement under pressure.
By the end of the programme, participants should be able to explain what good looks like, lead others to deliver it, and evidence that it has been achieved.
Selection process
Places on Project CHARM are limited to ensure meaningful learning and discussion.
Selection follows a two-stage process:
-
Written application (this form)
-
CV Review
-
Short interview, focused on motivation, readiness, and commitment
The process is structured to ensure fairness and consistency. Confidence alone is not the deciding factor.
Time commitment
Applicants should be aware of the following commitments:
-
Mandatory attendance at all four face-to-face days to complete the programme
-
Completion of assignments between modules
-
Engagement with reflective learning and discussion
Support from your employer is a required element, and we will be asking for a letter of support from your line manager.
What do our graduates say about this programme?
Graduates consistently describe Project CHARM as practical, confidence-building, and directly relevant to the realities of running a care home.

Participants report that the programme helped them make sense of leadership responsibilities that previously felt unclear or intimidating, particularly around regulation, governance, and finance. Many said it was the first time these areas had been explained in a way that felt accessible and usable in day-to-day practice, rather than abstract or policy-heavy.
Several graduates reflected that the biggest shift was not knowledge alone, but confidence. Being able to articulate statutory responsibility, lead difficult conversations earlier, and read a basic profit and loss report without avoidance changed how they showed up at work. For some, this meant stepping into deputy or acting leadership responsibilities more comfortably. For others, it meant feeling ready to apply for roles they had previously ruled out.
The cohort-based design was also highlighted as a strength. Graduates valued learning alongside peers who were facing similar pressures, sharing honest experiences, and practising leadership conversations in a safe environment. Many described the programme as demanding but supportive, with enough challenge to stretch thinking without feeling overwhelming.
Across the first cohort, participants rated the programme and its modules highly, citing clarity, relevance, and facilitation as key strengths. Most importantly, graduates said they left with a clearer sense of what registered management actually involves, and with practical tools they could use immediately, rather than vague encouragement to “be more confident.”
